Companies I think are going to jump on this bandwagon as well...they may call it "cross training" within an organization (or some other word like career development)but I think it is a way for them to provide different experiences for someone who wants to career change but but stay with the company.

For instance, in a retail company like I work in, you could be called upon to play a role, at some point in your professional career, in various functions such as Marketing, Operations, Merchandising - All VERY different functions.

I think this is going to become even more prevelant so companies can build loyalty and hopefully attract some to stay over the long haul vs. jumping ship.

My cynical Gen-X perspective? In the past, I think just as many people may have been interested in this kind of variety and personal development but traded it for security. Now, there's much less to be gained directly from "loyalty." And, because so much training/learning happens on the job, sticking with one thing is often a handicap when the inevitable layoff, merger, etc. happens.

I wonder: when a Jehovah's Witness dies and goes to Heaven, does God hide behind the door and pretend He's not home?
